Where possible, repairs should match the existing slate type, thickness, colour and coursing so the roof remains visually consistent and performs correctly. Composite products may not be suitable for heritage roofs or may change the appearance. The best outcome is usually achieved by sourcing matching natural slate and installing it with correct fixings and detailing.

Repairs are ideal when failure is localised: a few slipped slates, isolated flashing splits, or minor box gutter issues. Restoration becomes the better option when problems are widespread: multiple leaks, extensive corrosion, repeated patching, decayed battens, or failing valleys and flashings across large sections. These are high-movement, high-water-flow junctions. A conservation-first scope aims to preserve character by matching materials, maintaining traditional profiles and keeping period-appropriate detailing. Where modern improvements are used (such as flexible pointing), they are applied in a way that does not visually disrupt the roofline and still respects the original construction.

A quality quote should include a clear scope, inclusions and exclusions, material specifications (especially for slate and metalwork), method notes for flashings, valleys and box gutters, access and safety allowances, and warranty details. A photo condition report is a strong indicator the contractor has properly assessed the roof before pricing.
