A 1930s English-Style Landmark in Hawthorn
Hawthorn, particularly around Scotch Hill, is known for substantial interwar English-style homes where steep slate roofs, tall chimneys and pronounced gables define the streetscape.
This 1930s residence occupies a prominent hilltop site, with expansive roof planes clearly visible from the street. On homes of this scale, the roof is not simply functional. It forms part of the architectural identity.
Deterioration of the slate, ageing metalwork and uneven roof lines meant this job needed more than repair. It required structural correction and a restoration-led replacement approach, the same standard we apply across heritage roofing in Melbourne.
Structural Correction Before Slate Installation
Before installing new slate, the geometry of the roof was addressed.
The roof was levelled and adjusted where required, correcting inconsistencies in the original construction. Gable walls were ground back and re-aligned to suit the new battens and slate system, ensuring straight, consistent roof planes.
All aged metalwork was removed and replaced with new Colourbond components. Chimneys were repaired, sealed and re-pointed to match surrounding cappings in colour and finish.
This phase ensured the structure beneath the slate was sound, aligned and prepared for long-term performance.
Selecting Canadian Glendyne Slate to Suit the Architecture
Material selection was critical.
Canadian Glendyne natural slate was chosen for its deep charcoal tone and refined surface texture, complementing the red brick façade and prominent chimneys typical of Hawthorn’s interwar homes.
Its consistent thickness allows accurate coursing across large roof planes, maintaining the strong geometry associated with English-style architecture. Installed using copper clouts, the system balances traditional appearance with durability.
Rebuilding the Roof System
This project combined detailed roof restoration work with full slate replacement to ensure both structure and finish were corrected.
The result was a system rebuilt beneath the surface, not simply refreshed from above.
Works included:
Full strip of the existing slate and battens
Removal and replacement of deteriorated metalwork
Installation of new battens to suit corrected geometry
Replacement of flashings and valley detailing
Custom contemporary hip finish replacing original mitred hips and lead ridge cappings Installation of Canadian Glendyne slate using copper clouts
Installation of high-quality membrane to seal gables and reduce vermin entry

Integrating Solar Without Compromising Heritage
Two sections of the roof were designated for solar panel installation.
Natural slate can complicate bracket fixing and future access in solar zones. To accommodate this without disrupting the overall appearance, Barrington slate tiles were installed in those specific sections.
Barrington slate provides a compatible slate-like profile that meets heritage guidelines while allowing secure solar bracket installation. The transition between the Glendyne slate and the Barrington slate was handled carefully to maintain visual continuity.
This approach enabled modern energy integration without compromising architectural integrity.
Restored for Long-Term Performance
The completed works corrected structural irregularities, upgraded all critical metal detailing and restored the roof to a standard consistent with the home’s architectural significance.
From the street, the roof retains its strong English-style presence. Beneath the surface, it has been rebuilt for durability, alignment and long-term performance.
In Hawthorn’s established heritage precincts, roof replacement and restoration demand both technical expertise and architectural sensitivity. This project reflects that balance.
