The Constraint
Ninety years of accumulated geometry error on a hilltop landmark, an owner who wanted solar, and a heritage precinct that would not tolerate a visible change.

Correct the geometry at structure level rather than the surface, and put Barrington in two solar zones so the slate coursing runs true across every plane anyone can see.

The Constraint
The roof still looked impressive from the ground while corroded valley irons and split lead flashings were letting water in, on a school that had to keep operating.

The Call
Rebuild the drainage and metalwork inside a single two-week holiday window, on the argument that a roof which looks fine is the one that never gets funded.

The Constraint
An apartment block being renovated inside and preserved outside, with several hundred broken tiles and the owners’ money already committed to the interior.

The Call
Restore rather than replace, because broken is not the same as finished, and clean it only after the roof was watertight.

The Constraint
A period home with failed ridge mortar, corroded valley metal, leaking chimney junctions and a rotted Dutch gable wall.

The Call
Take on the render as well as the roof, rebuilding the gable in hand-applied roughcast to match, rather than handing the wall to someone else.

The Constraint
An 1860s Welsh slate roof with failing battens and metalwork, where a straight replacement would have destroyed irreplaceable original material.

The Call
Strip and reinstate around 80% of the original Welsh slate on new battens, accepting a far slower job to keep 155-year-old stone on the building.

A contemporary home where the existing covering was sound but wrong for the building it was sitting on.

The Call
Replace a serviceable roof in a compatible modern material, on the argument that the right roof for the building beats the roof that happens to be there.

The Constraint
A heritage-listed former hospital converted to a home, with failing valley irons, flashings and ridge capping across a large period roof.

The Call
Replace the metalwork and reinstate the picket ridge in traditional mortar, and leave the sound moss-covered sections deliberately untouched.

The Constraint
A working school campus of buildings from different decades, every roof a different material, all ageing at once inside one budget and one term calendar.

The Call
Sequence by condition and risk rather than by building, so the worst roofs were done first and not one building had to close.
