Feature Hawthorn Project

Heritage Slate Roof Renewal on Scotch Hill, Hawthorn

This 1930s English-style home on Scotch Hill needed more than surface repairs. Ageing slate, misaligned rooflines and deteriorated metalwork called for a full heritage replacement.

We rebuilt and levelled the roof structure, re-aligned the gables and installed Canadian Glendyne slate with copper clouts. Flashings, metalwork and chimneys were renewed throughout, with Barrington slate sections added for solar integration while preserving the heritage roofline.

  • Scope: Full slate roof replacement, structural correction, new battens, Colorbond metalwork and solar-ready Barrington slate sections.
  • Outcome: A straighter, weather-ready slate roof that retains the home's heritage character.

Detail Renewal
Replace damaged roof tiles, renew lead flashing and repoint ridge capping only where an inspection confirms deterioration.

Roof Leak Detection and Repair

Inspection-Led Diagnosis
A roof leak repair begins by tracing the likely water-entry point rather than treating the internal stain as the source.

Targeted Repair Scope
The roofer documents failed sealant, displaced materials, blocked valley debris or damaged flashing before issuing a targeted repair scope.

Roof Restoration and Re-Roofing

Condition-Based Options
Restoration or re-roofing is assessed against the condition of the roof covering, drainage, structural concerns and expected service life.

Compatible Material Selection
Where restoration is no longer viable, compatible materials and colours are selected to suit the roof form and applicable heritage requirements.

A full roof replacement renews the covering, battens, flashings and drainage components where they have reached the end of their serviceable life.

Complete System Scope
The scope may include gutter replacement, downpipe repair and valley replacement, with materials selected to suit the property and heritage considerations.

Why Hawthorn Roofs are Different

Roofing in Hawthorn's Heritage Overlay Precincts

Hawthorn's heritage homes need roofing work that respects both the original detail and local planning controls. We inspect the existing roof first, then recommend a practical repair, restoration or replacement scope.

  • Heritage overlays: Boroondara heritage overlays cover much of Hawthorn. Visible changes to roof materials, profile or colour may require planning approval.
  • Local roof types: Federation terracotta, Victorian slate and corrugated iron roofs are common around the Glenferrie and Burwood Road precincts. Matching materials, pitch and visible details helps retain the property's character.
  • Autumn drainage risks: Elm and plane trees can block valleys, box gutters and downpipes. Early roof and gutter inspections can prevent ceiling damage and repeat patch repairs.

Google Review

I am not one who normally writes a review but believe that credit should be given where due. Shamrock roofing services recently did whatever necessary work on my roof to bring it up to standard and replaced all the slates on the roof.

They weren’t the first or the last that I contacted to have the roof redone. Michael, the frontman for the company cam...

We considered repairing our 145 year old slate but ultimately trusted Michael and his team to replace the whole roof. We found Michael to be reliable, logical and accurate in the way he approaches his work. I heard from other experienced tradies that he learned from the best (his Dad!) and this shows in the results. He clearly loves roof slating and sings loudly while he works. Michael really cares about his clients and answered Every Single Question with patience. He has a happy team who have been careful, responsive guys who left the place immaculate at the end. Highly recommended.

Highly recommend Michael and the team at Shamrock roof services.

I got them to repair our roof at work. They had hell with the council and still were really polite through it and kept us fully informed as it was going on. They also did a few extra jobs like add insulation, block the chimney and help to repair a box gutter. The insulation actually made a crazy difference and they used really good quality stuff without me asking...

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions We Get Asked About Roofing

Sometimes. Routine like-for-like repairs and maintenance may not need planning permit. However, heritage overlay precincts cover much of Hawthorn, and visible changes to roof materials, profile, colour or heritage features can require a permit.

We document the existing roof during our inspection and flag anything likely to need council approval before you commit to a scope.

Yes. We service Hawthorn East, Hawthorn and surrounding heritage suburbs including Kew, Camberwell, Balwyn, Malvern and Surrey Hills, where we have completed heritage roofing projects on homes, schools and churches.

Costs depend on roof size, access, material matching, the extent of deterioration and whether structural or drainage work is required.

An on-site inspection allows us to provide an itemised scope and written quote for the work your roof needs.

Often, yes. We assess the existing slate or terracotta profile, size, colour and condition, then source the closest suitable match.

Because we work directly with Welsh Slate, Glendyne, CUPA and Barrington, our matching options are wider than most roofers can access. Where an exact match is not possible, we explain the options before work begins.

Yes, and we have done exactly this in Hawthorn.

On a 1930s slate home on Scotch Hill, we installed Barrington slate in the designated solar sections, giving secure bracket mounting and future access while the surrounding Glendyne slate kept the heritage roofline intact.

Every roof is assessed first, as condition and planning controls vary. See the Hawthorn solar integration project.

Stay off the roof and leave unstable branches in place.

Hawthorn's established elm and plane canopy makes falling limbs one of the most common causes of roof damage we see in the suburb. Fallen limbs can crack tiles, puncture metal roofing, damage flashings and block gutters, creating leaks that are not immediately visible.

If safe, photograph the damage from the ground for your insurer, then arrange a make-safe inspection. We can also prepare roof reports for insurance claims.
